Bosnia is closer than you think.
Two hours from the Adriatic, a country of limestone gorges, Ottoman bridges and coffee that takes an hour. Every guided day in Bosnia and Herzegovina, reviewed.
Sarajevo fits four centuries into one walk.

Cobbles and copper stalls at one end of Ferhadija, Habsburg shopfronts at the other, and the line in the pavement that marks where east meets west. The valley closes in on all sides, which is why the cable car is worth the ticket.

Bascarsija, Ferhadija and the meeting of east and west
The bazaar quarter, the Gazi Husrev-bey complex, the Latin Bridge, and a stop for coffee poured from a dzezva the way it has been for four hundred years.
What travellers come to Bosnia and Herzegovina for.
The Old Bridge, the waterfalls at Kravice, a dervish house under a cliff, whitewater on the Neretva and a mountain the Olympics left behind. Six days that between them cover the country.
The tours travellers in Bosnia book most.

Bosnia in a day, from Dubrovnik or Split.
Bosnia’s single most-booked product does not start in Bosnia at all. Coaches leave the Dalmatian coast early, cross at Neum or Metkovic and give you Mostar, Kravice and Pocitelj before dinner. Long days, but they work.
Mostar empties at five, and that is when to see it.
The day-trip coaches leave in the late afternoon and the Old Bridge goes quiet. Stay the night and you get Kujundziluk without the queue, the divers practising off the parapet, and the Neretva turning that impossible green under the arch.
Herzegovina runs on water.
The karst here swallows rivers whole and hands them back as springs. Kravice drops in a horseshoe you can swim under all summer; the Buna comes straight out of a cliff face at Blagaj; the Neretva runs cold and green the whole way to the sea.

What a day in Bosnia actually costs.
Bosnia is the cheapest country in the region to travel guided, and the gap between the bottom band and the top is smaller than you expect.
Old town walks, coffee and burek mornings, museum entries and the shorter runs out of Sarajevo.
The full-day classics: Mostar and Kravice, Jajce and Travnik, a rafting day on the Neretva with lunch.
Three things Bosnia has and nowhere else does.
A cliff with a monastery built into it, a nuclear bunker under a hillside, and a bridge people jump off for a living.

The Buna Spring at Blagaj
The Buna does not trickle out of a hillside, it arrives all at once from a cave mouth two hundred metres high, and a white Ottoman dervish house sits on the rock beside it. It has been there since the fifteenth century. You take your shoes off at the door, and the water is loud enough that nobody talks much.

Tito’s Bunker at Konjic
Under a hill outside Konjic, behind three blast doors, sits a command complex built in secret over twenty-six years for the Yugoslav leadership. It has bedrooms, a conference room and a switchboard, all still in place. It was declassified in the 1990s and is now partly an art gallery, which is the strangest part.

The Divers of the Old Bridge
Jumping from the Stari Most is a Mostar tradition older than the modern country, run by a diving club that has trained members since 1664. Practice jumps happen off the lower platforms most summer days; the full leap from the parapet is twenty-four metres into water cold enough to knock the wind out of you.

Sarajevo and Srebrenica, with the people who were there.
The siege of Sarajevo lasted 1,425 days and the tunnel under the airport runway was the city’s only way out. Guides on these tours are often survivors or veterans. The Srebrenica memorial at Potocari is a three-hour drive east of Sarajevo and most tours make it a full day.
The days in Bosnia that run on a season.
Most of the country can be booked the night before from your guesthouse. These cannot. Snowmelt, mountain roads and a bunker with a fixed visitor list decide when they run.
- 01Tara River Rafting Day TourThe Neretva runs high on snowmelt from April to June and the rafting season closes for winter.
- 02Lukomir Highland Village HikeThe road to Lukomir is snowed in for much of the year; the village is reachable roughly June to October.
- 03Secret Tito’s Bunker/Konjic TourThe bunker at Konjic is a former military site with timed entry and a capped group size.
- 04Climb Via Ferrata in SarajevoFixed-rope and canyon routes run on daylight and water level, not on demand.
Sarajevo rains, and then it is a city of interiors.
The valley traps weather, and from November the city sits under it for days. That is the argument for the indoor half of Bosnia: a coppersmith’s workshop off Kazandziluk, a kitchen with a pie pan, a museum, and coffee served with a lump of sugar and no hurry.
